Police Threaten Two DC Occupy Encampments

By Kevin Zeese - Posted on 27 January 2012

Next steps:

a) Protest has been called for Lafayette Square from 10a-3pm Sunday in front of the White House to convey message "we aren't leaving"

b) Request for people to come to Freedom Plaza at noon on Monday.

Updated January 28th at 12:22

The police have put occupiers on Freedom Plaza and McPherson Square on official notice  that "on or about" noon on Monday they will begin to enforce no-camping rules.  The police did bed-checks last night at McPherson.  This comes after Rep. Darrell Issa (R- CA) held hearings last week pressuing the U.S. Park Service to enforce the law.  A week before that D.C. Mayor Vincent Gray urged that McPherson be closed due to public health issues and combined with Freedom Plaza.

There are inconsistent reports and we will update this blog as new information comes in.  People will be needed at Freedom Plaza and McPherson Square on Monday at noon to show support for the occupies. Both occupations have General Assemblies tonight and more will be reported.

The Notice from the Park Service reads:

National Park Service Camping Enforcement
Notice for McPherson Square and Freedom Plaza

This communication serves as a notice that on or about noon january 30 2012 the united states park police will commence enforcement of the long standing National park service regulations that prohibit camping and the use of temporary structures for camping in McPherson Square and Freedom Plaza. The NPS has repeatedly advised participants in both parks of the camping regulations and had sought voluntary compliance. On or about noon January 30 2012, if camping violations are observed, individual violators may be subject to arrest and their property subject to seizure as evidence.Any temporary Structure used for camping also will be subject to seizure as an abatement of a public nuisance, and may be reclaimed by the property owner between the hours of 8 am - 5 pm at the park Police D-1 Station located at 960 Ohio Drive. S.W. Washington Dc  20024, if done within 60 days.items determined to be trash or bio-hazard however will be disposed of as refuse, so you are advised to promptly dispose of any such items.
