The Right to a Fair Wage
This article makes a strong case for raising the minimum wage - people cannot live on the currrent minimum wage (which has actually declined relative to inflation). While I agree that raising the minimum wage is necessary, I find the Harkin-Miller bill to be insufficient to meet human needs and believe it is primarily an election ploy to convonce people to vote for Democrats. The reality is that more austerity is coming no matter who is elected this November and we must educate and organize ourselves to work together, support each other and be prepared for a longterm battle to create the new world we desire.
We Are in the Midst of a Great Turning -- What Should We Do?
Joanna Macy is one of the leaders of the movement for the Great Turning. Many in the Occupy movement may not realize it but we are part of the Great Turning. This is the transformation shift from a corporate, capitalist, dog-eat-dog competitive economy to a life-sustaining, co-operative , problem-solving sustainable society. The new economy that is emerging will break from the current economy which is destructive of the Earth and does not meet the needs of the people.
